About Mombasa

Mombasa is a very hospitable city, located in the southern part of Kenya along the Indian Ocean. Mombasa is the second largest city and the oldest town in Kenya with the largest port of East Africa - dating way back in history. This city has lots to offer besides the gorgeous beaches. Mombasa became Portugal’s main trading centre along the Eastern Coast of Africa. This led to the construction of a monumental fort that still stands today known as Fort Jesus which you will visit during your stay. The Fort served as the main hub for trading goods, a prison for slaves and most importantly; it protected the Portuguese from conflicts with locals and threatening foreign battalions. Slavery was the city’s major activity at the time. Local slaves were exchanged for goods from visiting ships that often came from European countries. The trading of spices, cotton and coffee, which were cultivated and grown in the rich fertile soils of the town’s farms, is one of the reasons Mombasa was a popular destination for seafarers at the time. Captured slaves were forced to work on these farms in extremely harsh and inhumane conditions. The port of Mombasa was thus very influential and has been since the 15th century. It played a significant role in laying the foundations of the nation and continues to do so till today – serving the whole of East and Central Africa. Some of the popular attractions in the town relate directly to the town’s history, while others complement the tourism industry that the town thrives on. Old Town, Fort Jesus, Mombasa Tusks, the Hindu Temple, Mamba Village, Bamburi Nature Trail, Bombolulu Workshops and the Gedi Ruins not forgetting the water sports like scuba diving, boat rides, deep-sea fishing and water skiing are some of the attractions in this part of Kenya. There are also other excursions and you might want to take during your stay as they will further enhance your vacation experience!
